Proxies are not working for my firefox?

Alright - a few days ago, the proxy I was using to get into this website I am banned from, was working fine, slow, but fine. It was free. Well, the next day, the proxy quit working. So I went and tried a few others, and still, none were working. I have tried to set the proxy for my firefox browser, AND, for my IEXPLORER. Everytime I do, the error I got is this..
The requested site did not respond to a connection request and the browser has stopped waiting for a reply.

What is the problem? Why was proxies working earlier for me, but not now? By the way, I get this error whenever I try to browse ANY site.
