Answers:
If you're talking about the bar below the status bar, it could be a result of a faulty extension which you installed.
Try to figure out what extension might have caused the problem. Disable them one by one and restart firefox to isolate the problematic add-on and check(Tools -> Add -ons-> extension -> select extension and click disable). Also update your extensions...since developers do fix bugs with each update.

It could also be due to google web accelerator or google photos screensaver, uninstall them and check.

If the gray bar isn't your problem, then still check your extensions one by one and disable/uninstall the culprit one.
Also, start firefox in safe mode and check. Start > run > type 'firefox -safe-mode' (without quotes) and hit OK. Or go to start > programs > mozilla firefox > mozilla firefox (safe mode). Here select to disable addons , reset toolbars and controls , reset userpreferences and click make changes and restart. Hopefully that'll solve the problem.
If not, then uninstall firefox completely and reinstall it. Here's how you should uninstall completely:
1)Uninstall firefox from the add/remove control panel (Start-> Run and type 'appwiz.cpl' (without quotes) or 'control appwiz.cpl' if you're in win9x and hit OK. Select mozilla firefox from the list and hit remove.
2)Now delete the Mozilla Firefox folder from 'program files' (Assuming firefox is installed in C:\program files, Go to that path and delete the entire Mozilla firefox folder.
3)Now remove the firefox folder from : start-> run-> type in %appdata% and hit OK (this will open the application data folder)->Mozilla. Delete the Firefox folder in the Mozilla directory. If you use only the Firefox 'product' of Mozilla, then its ok to delete the Mozilla folder itself.
Re-install Firefox
I agree with duce. Firefox 2.0.0.4 is the current version.
Yes, it is of course a good thing to have the most recent release of Firefox, but also consider...View: Toolbars -
are you looking at a Toolbar, docked down there, somewhere near the Status bar, that you forgot you had?
For example, the Download Manager add-on can be docked in such a way that it occupies the entire width of the screen and lives across the bottom, above the status bar. View, select Toolbars, and check! Because, installing a new release of Firefox will keep your add-ins intact and you MIGHT face the same problem!
