I have clicked the "Change appearance" and "new colour", but browser is stuck on white with blue writing. Any ideas? Also sometimes some text appears on top of other text.

are you using firefox 3
How are you trying to change color, are you doing it via windows control panel or tying to do it through firefox.
firefox has lots of themes that can be added on to change the appearance.
Text on text sounds like the zoom level. some layed websites are designed to be viewed just at one zoom level if you increase this the layers skew.
