How do I create a non-fixed-width 2-column-right layout in CSS, where the right column loads last?

Specifically, I want the (narrow) right column to load after the wider main content column. Most templates I've seen ask you to load the right column of content first so that it properly floats to the right.

The other constraint I have is that I do not wish to specify the width of the overall layout. The right column has a fixed width, but the main column should flex with the browser window size.

I have a solution that works in Firefox, but it doesn't work in IE.
