Why doesn't my Windows Explorer or Windows Messenger launch anymore? Its not a internet thing, or firewall.

Dont know what happend, but a month back something changed. Now I cant launch my Windows explorer. I get some kind of blocking message/connection message. Also now, i downloaded the new Windows Live Messanger, it wont connect either, cause Its integratedwith the Explorer. Something is changed. I dont' have a virus/firewall program running or installed other than the XP and Window Defender. Ohh and also now when I use my firefox and go to a video game site i used to go to, the videos dont play in my Windows Media Player like they used to. Sommething is messed up with my windows programs. I can download videos, have highspeed acces and it is fine...Help!!!!
