If you right-click in a blank space where an image should be, you should see an option "Unblock images from example.com". That usually fixes things, but if not, are the images on a different server (which would mean that you have blocked third-party images in your preferences)?

I'm not sure how this happened, but it seems like you disabled the images. If you go to Tools at the top of the screen then to "Options..." then click the tab reading "Content" you will see some check boxes. Make sure the one that says "Load images automatically" is checked. And by the way, Google maps is powered by a different plug-in, such as Flash or Java.
Firefox
Tools > options > content tab > check all 4 boxes
If you are only having this problem with google maps it is probably because Google maps are not just simple images such as .jpg's Google uses a programming language called AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML). Make sure your browser (firefox) is set to allow javascript, otherwise it won't work.
