Your problem is strictly the program, use adept to uninstall and then reinstall firefox. Make sure firefox automatically configures your settings and you should get higher speeds.
open firefox click on tools /options /general
click on connection settings tab
put a dot in the direct connection to the internet click on ok and on ok again then hit the reload page icon at the top the blue reload page icon
Try contacting FireFox support or one of their forums, you'll probably have better luck there.
I don't know anything about the operating systems you use. But I will tell you what I know. I got the net on cable in April. I started with Internet Explorer. Soon after I started using Firefox. Man... what a difference. No adware, and really super fast by comparison. I have a 2GHz, 1GB RAM, and a good connection speed. Cable. I added the yahoo toolbar and a download bar (extensions). I love it because of the "tab" feature. Not many open windows, and lots of tabs. I don't know exactly how slow you are talking about, 56k is slower, but Firefox is fast. I think since you said it was your second OS, then focus on it. Keep using. Way fast.
